Description

The Clayton County Public Schools arena, formerly the Sears department store at Southlake Mall, was purchased for $4.4 million in 2021 by the school system.

Plans for the 15-arce property include building a 7,000-seat arena and convention center. The district intends to use the facility

to host graduations as well as house the College and Career Academy. In 2022, school system officials announced an expansion to include suites and a Discovery Center, similar to the one at the Georgia World Congress Center run by the Junior Achievement of Georgia. The center offers students a number of classes including financial literacy and career readiness.

CCPS has committed $55 million while Clayton County is chipping in an additional $10 million in Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax monies.
